Anglican Family Prayer Guide

If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”  2 Chronicles 7:14

The Morning and Evening Prayer services are below if you wish to use them at home, either personally or in a small group.

MORNING PRAYER

O GOD, you are my God, early will I seek you. In the morning, I will direct my prayer unto you and will look up.

NEW are your mercies every morning, O Lord; And great is your faithfulness.

Let us pray.

OUR Father, who are in heaven;
Hallowed be your Name;
Your kingdom come;
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And let us not be led into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.

Thanksgiving for the gift of another day

WE give you hearty thanks, O heavenly Father, for the rest of the past night, and for the gift of a new day. Grant that we may so pass its hours in the perfect freedom of your service, that at eventide we may again give thanks to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Remembrance of God’s Presence

O HEAVENLY Father, in whom we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life we may never forget you, but remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Daily Work

O LORD our Heavenly Father, by whose providence the duties of men are variously ordered; Grant to us all the spirit to labour heartily to do our work in our several stations, in serving one Master and looking for one reward. Teach us to put to good account whatever talents you have lent to us, and enable us to redeem our time by patience and zeal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer and Intercession

O LORD God, who have bidden light to shine out of darkness, and have again wakened us to praise you for your goodness and to ask for your grace: Accept now the offering of our worship and thanksgiving, and grant to us all such requests as may be acceptable to your holy will. Make us to live as children of the light, and heirs of your everlasting kingdom.

Remember, O Lord, according to the multitude of your mercies, your whole Church, all who join with us in prayer, and all our brethren, wherever they may be, who stand in need of your aid.

Pour down upon us all the riches of your grace, so that, redeemed in soul and body, and steadfast in faith, we may ever praise your wonderful and holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O GOD, Most High and Holy, Three in One, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; we offer to you this day ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto you; to whom be all praise and glory. Amen.

The Grace (II Corinthians 13:14)

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.

EVENING PRAYER

O LORD, let our prayer be set forth in your sight as the incense, and the lifting up of our hands as an evening sacrifice.

Let us confess our sins to Almighty God:

O ALMIGHTY Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. Have mercy upon us, O Lord; have mercy upon us after your great goodness. According to the multitude of your mercies do away our offences. Wash us thoroughly from our wickedness, and cleanse us from our sins. For Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

For Pardon through the Cross

ALMIGHTY Father, who of your great love to men gave your dearly beloved Son to die for us; Grant that through his Cross our sins may be put away, and remembered no more against us, and that, cleansed by his Blood, and mindful of his sufferings, we may take up our cross daily, and follow him in newness of life, until we come to his everlasting kingdom; through the same your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Relatives and Friends

O LOVING Father, we commend to your gracious keeping all who are near and dear to us. Have mercy upon any who are sick, and comfort those who are in pain, anxiety or sorrow. Awaken all who are careless about eternal things. Bless those who are young and in health, that they may give the days of their strength to you. Comfort the aged and infirm, that your peace may rest upon them. Hallow the ties of kindred, that we may help, and not hinder, one another in all such good works as you have prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Freedom from Worry

O LORD, you who have pity for all our weakness: Put away from us worry and every anxious fear, that, having ended the labours of the day in your sight, and committing our tasks, ourselves, and all we love into your keeping, we may, now that night has come, receive from you your priceless gift of sleep; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OUR Father, who are in heaven;
Hallowed be your Name;
Your kingdom come;
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And let us not be led into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.

Here may follow this or some other Hymn:

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That you, with steadfast love, would keep
Your watch around us while we sleep.

From evil dreams defend our sight,
From fears and terrors of the night;
Tread underfoot our ghostly foe
That we no sinful thought may know.

O Father, that we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;
And Holy Spirit, by whose breath
Our souls are raised to life from death.

The Collects for Protection

VISIT, we beseech you, O Lord, this place, and drive from it all the snares of the enemy; let your holy angels dwell here to preserve us in peace; and may your blessing be upon us evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LIGHTEN our darkness, we beseech you, O Lord; and by your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The following prayers may be added:

O LORD Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who at this evening hour rested in the sepulchre, and thereby sanctified the grave to be a bed of hope to your people: Make us so to abound in sorrow for our sins, which were the cause of your passion, that when our bodies lie in the dust, our souls may live with you, who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, ages without end. Amen.

LOOK down, O Lord, from your heavenly throne, illuminate the darkness of this night with your celestial brightness, and from the sons of light banish the deeds of darkness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BE present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world, may rest upon your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving

O MOST merciful Father, we humbly thank you for all your gifts so freely bestowed upon us. For life and health and safety, for power to work and leisure to rest, for all that is beautiful in creation and in the lives of men, we praise and magnify your holy Name.

But, above all, we thank you for our spiritual mercies in Christ Jesus our Lord, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. Fill our hearts with all joy and peace in believing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Doxology (Ephesians 3:20-21)

NOW unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, unto Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus, throughout all generations, ages without end. Amen.

Before the Commendation there may be said by all:

We will lay ourselves down and sleep in peace;
For you alone, O Lord, make us dwell in safety.

You, O Lord, are in the midst of us,
And we are called by your Name.
Leave us not, O Lord our God.

Preserve us, O Lord, waking, and guard us sleeping,
That awake we may watch with Christ,
And asleep we may rest in peace. Amen.

Commendation

THE Almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve us. Amen.

Or

THE Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night, and at the last a perfect end; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with us this night, and for evermore. Amen.
